Cape Cod Keeps One (Plums Street Samplers)

Hi everyone! I’m back from vacation, and happy to report on some finishes – some of them are actually getting oldish by now. Firstly, the stitching is done on the first of Plum Street Samplers’ Cape Cod Keeps. I’ve started the second one, featuring the whale, and hope to report soon on that too.

Ciao a tutti! Sono tornata dalle vacanze, e sono felice di poter mostrare qualche lavoretto finito – in realtà sono già un po’ attempatelli. Per cominciare ho finito di ricamare il primo dei Cape Cod Keeps di Plum Street Samplers. Ho anche iniziato il secondo, quello con la balena, e spero di potervelo mostrare presto.

Breathing Space (Veera Välimäki)

Second, the sweater that wouldn’t be finished, Veera Välimäki’s Breathing Space … I’ve procrastinated on this one in the most ridiculous manner, mainly because I found out along the way that no, I DON’T LIKE KNITTING TOP-DOWNS! All the knitting in the round for the sleeves, and having to manage an entire sweater when there’s just some ribbing left to do for the wrist? No. Thanks. First and last time for me, I’ll stick to sewing up parts from now on. With that off my chest, I will concede that I like my new sweater very much and am looking forward to temperatures dropping low enough to wear it.

Poi, la maglia che non voleva essere finita, Breathing Space di Veera Välimäki… ho tergiversato in modo assurdo con questo lavoro, soprattutto perché, mentre lo facevo, mi sono resa conto che NON MI PIACE FARE I TOP-DOWN! Tutte le maniche coi ferri a doppia punta, e doversi trascinare tutto il maglione alla fine, anche quando manca solo l’ultimo polsino? No. Grazie. È stata la prima e ultima volta, e per le prossime maglie sarò ben felice di dover unire i vari pezzi. Detto questo, devo comunque ammettere che questa mi piace molto, e non vedo l’ora che arrivino temperature accettabili per metterla.

Last but not least, another project which had slowed down considerably, Country Cottage Needleworks’ Frosty Forest: I’ve at last finished the sixth of nine blocks, Snowgirl’s Cottage, and am feeling more love for the poor thing. I hope to keep up with it nicely now.

E infine, l’altro lavoro che stava diventando “problematico”, Frosty Forest di Country Cottage Needleworks: finalmente ho finito Showgirl’s Cottage, il sesto riquadro (su nove), e mi è tornata la voglia di farlo. Spero di portarlo avanti abbastanza di buona lena.

Summer stitching

English Whitework Sampler (The Needle's Prayse)

Hi everyone, as usual far too much time has passed since my latest update – time seems to go faster as I age 😦 Also, there hasn’t been much stitching going on here, because of a really mean summer hitting us a few weeks earlier than it should have done: not funny! As a result, I’ve been rather restless, and that leads to impulse starts and little progress on anything. So this is just a quick update on my current projects, bearing in mind that there are still many others waiting on the back burner. First of all, I recently acquired a re-issue of a classic, The Needle’s Prayse’s English Whitework Sampler, which is so beautiful that it just begged to be started. I’m finding that I really need daylight to stich on it at ease, so progress is slow – but the first band didn’t take long. The second band… not so much, with all those eyelets, but hey, nobody’s chasing me.

Ciao a tutti, come al solito è passato veramente troppo tempo dal mio ultimo post – purtroppo quando si invecchia il tempo sembra andare più in fretta 😦 C’è anche da dire che non ho crocettato molto, perché un’estate torrida ci è piombata addosso con un certo anticipo rispetto agli anni scorsi (bleah!) Di conseguenza, sono diventata inquieta, e questo porta ad avvii impulsivi, e a scarso progresso su qualsiasi lavoro. Quindi questo post è una rapida panoramica sui lavori attualmente in corso, tenedo presente che ce ne sono molti altri che aspettano pazientemente. Innanzitutto, ho recentemente acquisito una ristampa di un classico, English Whitework Sampler di The Needle’s Prayse, che è talmente bello che non poteva non essere cominciato subito. Purtroppo riesco a lavorarci bene solo in luce diurna, quindi non procede molto rapidamente – ma la prima sezione è stata abbastanza veloce da ricamare. La seconda… non tanto, con tutti quegli occhielli. Ma non mi corre dietro nessuno.

As mentioned last time, I started the 4th in Little House Needleworks’ coffe/tea-themed series, Caffé Latte.

Come scritto l’ultima volta, ho cominciato Caffé Latte, il quarto schema nella serie di Little House Needleworks dedicata a the e caffé.

And another irrestible one was Plum Street Samplers’ Cape Cod Keeps: two pincushion charts, this is the first. Mermaids and whales are great favourites of mine, and my first vacation with DH, decades ago, included a brief visit to Cape Cod – bingo.

Un altro a cui non ho potuto resistere è Cape Cod Keeps di Plum Street Samplers: due puntaspilli, di cui questo è il primo. Sirene e balene sono tra i miei temi preferiti, e la mia prima vacanza col marito, decenni fa, ha toccato Cape Cod – bingo.

I’ve been plodding along slowly on the latest block of Country Cottage Needleworks’ Frosty Forest series. It might have to do with the incongruity of stitching a snow-themed project in this blooming heat. This is how far I’ve come in the last month and a half – pretty pathetic, eh?

Sto andando molto a rilento con il sesto riquadro della serie Frosty Forest di Country Cottage Needleworks. Forse perché è strano crocettare tanta neve quando fa così maledettamente caldo. Ecco quello che sono riuscita a fare nell’ultimo mese e mezzo – che pena, eh?

Frappuccino

Frappuccino (Little House Needleworks)

Once upon a very long time ago, I stitched this. And this. And I still had two more designs of this series by Little House Designs in my stash. And at last one of them has been stitched up: presenting Frappuccino. Thank goodness I’d cut the linen for all four all those years ago, and stored it with the charts, so I didn’t have to do any extra digging to find the right stuff. Now I firmly intend not to let another decade pass before stitching the last one (Caffé Latte): I’ve already started it, stay tuned.

Quasi una vita fa, crocettai questo. E questo. E ce n’erano altri due di questa serie di Little House Needleworks nelle mie scorte. E finalmente uno dei due è stato crocettato: vi presento Frappuccino. Per fortuna avevo tagliato il lino per tutti e quattro, tutti quegli anni fa, lasciandolo insieme agli schemi, così non ho dovuto andare a cercare la pezza fra le scorte. Adesso sono fermamente intenzionata a non far passare un altro decennio prima di completare il quartetto con Caffè Latte: l’ho già cominciato, rimanete sintonizzati.

Frosty Forest, the central block

Frosty Forest, central block (Country Cottage Needleworks)

Another month gone by, sigh… I’ve had a lot happening on many fronts (work, family, life…), so stitching has pretty much been on the back burner. Nevertheless, she persisted. And just about managed to finish another block in the Frosty Forest stitch-along. This one takes me past the halfway mark, which is good: 5 blocks down, 4 to go. I hope this coming month will see more stitching done – happy June, everyone.

È passato un altro mese, sigh… Con tanti impegni su diversi fronti (lavoro, famiglia, vita…), le crocette sono state alquanto trascurate. Sono riuscita almeno a completare un altro riquadro nel SAL Frosty Forest. Con questo sono arrivata oltre la metà, che è un’ottima notizia: 5 riquadri fatti, 4 da fare. Spero vivamente che il prossimo mese mi veda produrre più crocette – buon giugno a tutti.

Snowman’s Cottage

Hey, I’m still alive! And, just in time for the end of the month, I’ve managed to finish a new block on our stitch-along of the Country Cottage Needleworks Frosty Forest series – Snowman’s Cottage. I’ve settled on a pace which is exactly half of what it should be, as the idea was to stitch two blocks a month, and I’ve done four since New Year’s Day… but I’ve been distracted by my knitting (should have an update on that soon), and stitching has suffered because of that. The good news is that tomorrow is a public holiday, so I can use it to make up somewhat for lost time. Happy May Day!

Ehi, sono ancora viva! E giusto in tempo per la fine del mese, ho finito un nuovo riquadro del nostro SAL sulla serie Frosty Forest di Country Cottage Needleworks: Snowman’s Cottage. Ormai mi sono adagiata su un ritmo che è esattamente la metà di quello stabilito, dato che ci eravamo prefissate di completare due riquadri al mese, mentre questo per me è solo il quarto dall’inizio dell’anno… ma sono stata in parte assorbita dalla maglia (su cui spero di dare un aggiornamento in tempi brevi), e di conseguenza le crocette ne hanno sofferto. Approfitterò del giorno festivo domani per recuperare un po’ del tempo perduto. Buon Primo Maggio!

Snowy Deer

It’s a long time since any stitching appeared on this blog, but at last here’s some of it: third in the Frosty Forest series, the Snowy Deer block completes the top row. I’m painfully behind on the stitch-along schedule, and I’m not even going to try to catch up, but I will continue this project at my own easy pace.

È un bel po’ di tempo che non si vedevano crocette su questo blog, ma finalmente eccone: terzo nella serie Frosty Forest, il riquadro Snowy Deer completa la prima fila. Sono paurosamente indietro sulla scaletta del SAL e non proverò neanche a recuperare, ma intanto continuo il lavoro al mio ritmo tranquillo.

The knitting bug

I’ve been bitten by the knitting bug, after coming back from Paris with a stash of wonderful yarn, so there’s been hardly any stitching this month. Here are the results of the past few weeks. First, I finished the Col Tadoussac which I started while still in Paris: very fun pattern, and terrific colours (the 2nd picture shows them better). The Lang Merino which it called for is a great yarn to work with and to wear, nice and soft without any fuzz.

Mi ha preso la voglia di maglia, dopo essere tornata da Parigi con tanta lana meravigliosa, e di conseguenza di crocette questo mese ce ne sono state veramente poche. Ecco i risultati delle ultime settimane. Innanzitutto, ho finito il Col Tadoussac che avevo cominciato mentre ero ancora a Parigi: molto divertente, e i colori sono fantastici (li rende meglio la seconda foto). La Lang Merino che richiedeva è una lana molto piacevole con cui lavorare e da indossare, bella morbida e completamente liscia.

And then I started my first top-down sweater, Breathing Space, with Ullcentrum wool. It’s coming along nicely, and the unusual shape makes it interesting.

Poi ho cominciato il mio primo top-down, Breathing Space, con lana Ullcentrum. Procede bene, e la forma insolita lo rende interessante.

But by now I’m missing my stitching, and I’m painfully behind on the Frosty Forest stitch-along, so I guess I’ll have to rotate knitting and stitching for a while. Oh, to have more time…

Ma ormai mi mancano le crocette, e sono rimasta indietrissimo col SAL Frosty Forest, quindi mi toccherà alternare ricamo e maglia per un po’. Se solo ci fosse più tempo…

Paris 2017

Paris 2017 - Tour Eiffel

As always at this time of year, it’s time to report on the visit to Paris with my stitching buddies. The Aiguille en Fête show, our excuse main reason for the trip, was again our first stop.

Come sempre nel mese di febbraio, è arrivato il momento di raccontarvi della visita a Parigi con le amiche di crocette. La fiera Aiguille en Fête, la scusa ragione principale del viaggio, è stata di nuovo la prima tappa.

Despite the continuing scarcity of cross stitch stalls, it was a good show. The hall was dominated by an enormous hanging inspired by a Monet painting, which turned out to be a mosaic of 5 cm × 5 cm knitted squares. Anna Maria was actually enlisted by the ladies in charge of the project to knit 2 squares on the spot for the next hanging. For the first time there was a stall from the Musée de la Nacre (Mother-of-Pearl Museum), displaying materials and machines used to make buttons: very interesting.

Nonostante l’ormai consueta scarsità di espositori di punto croce, la fiera ci è piaciuta. Il salone era dominato da un enorme arazzo ispirato da un quadro di Monet, che da vicino si è rivelato essere un mosaico di quadrati 5 cm × 5 cm fatti a maglia. Anna Maria è stata perfino arruolata dalle signore che si occupavano del progetto per tricottare sul momento due quadrati per il prossimo arazzo. Per la prima volta c’era uno stand del Musée de la Nacre (Museo della Madreperla), con attrezzi e materiali usati per fabbricare bottoni: molto interessante.

I didn’t buy that much stash this year – obviously I’m becoming older and wiser. Only two charts, and no books or magazines, wow! Of course, I had to pick up some scissors from M. Roulot’s stall (sadly, he has decided not to come any more due to his age, but his daughter was present and selling on his behalf): all four of the scissors I bought have antique handles which M. Roulot refitted with new, excellent blades. The three at the top are a set. The buttons are reproductions of old ones from the Musée de la Nacre. I got lots of yarn: some Swedish wool in two shades for a sweater, and Lang merino in 4 shades for a cowl which I had to start that same evening (the pic was taken long after I got home, I’m not that fast a knitter!) The tweezers-cum-lens combo was irresistible for gadget-craving me. And the trims aren’t from the show, but from a spectacular Japanese store we stumbled across in town, Mokuba, which is entirely made of rows upon rows of rods holding ribbon and trim rolls of all sizes, colours, and materials.

Non ho comprato moltissimo quest’anno: chiaramente sto avanzando in età e in saggezza. Solo due schemi, e nessun libro o rivista, pazzesco! Ovviamente non potevo non comprare forbici da M. Roulot (che purtroppo ha deciso di non venire più di persona per motivi di età, facendosi però rappresentare da sua figlia): tutte le 4 forbici che ho acquistato hanno manici d’epoca, a cui M. Roulot ha aggiunto lame nuove di qualità eccelsa. Le tre in alto sono un set. I bottoni sono riproduzioni di esemplari d’epoca prodotte dal Musée de la Nacre. Ho preso parecchia lana: un tipo svedese in due tinte per farmi una maglia, e merino della Lang in 4 colori per uno scaldacollo che non ho potuto non cominciare la sera stessa (la foto è stata fatta diversi giorni dopo il ritorno a casa, non sono così veloce a fare la maglia!) La combinazione pinzetta+lente è risultata irresistibile per una gadgettara come me. E le passamanerie non le ho prese alla fiera, ma in uno spettacolare negozio giapponese nel centro di Parigi, Mokuba, che consiste interamente in file su file di scansie in cui sono appesi rotoli di nastri e passamanerie di ogni tipo.

Another unmissable place was the recently opened LEGO store at Les Halles: it was my first visit to one, and much damage was done. I loved the big models and sculptures!

Un altra tappa obbligata è stato il LEGO store inaugurato di recente a Les Halles: non ne avevo mai visitato uno, e ho fatto parecchi danni. Le sculture e riproduzioni sono spettacolari!

And as always we wandered around Paris: here are some representative pictures from St. Eustache, the Flower Market (not much to see at this time of year, but the orchid store was amazing), Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower (I went to the very top for the first time!) and other random sights. It was great, and so was my buddies’ company, and it was over way too quickly: looking forward to next year!

E come sempre abbiamo gironzolato per Parigi: ecco qualche foto rappresentativa da St. Eustache, il Mercato dei Fiori (non c’è molto da vedere in questa stagione, ma il negozio di orchidee era incredibile), Notre Dame, la Torre Eiffel (sono stata fin su in cima per la prima volta!) e vari altri posti. È stato magnifico, come lo è stata la compagnia delle mie amiche, ed è passato tutto troppo in fretta. Non vedo l’ora di tornarci l’anno prossimo!

Raccoon Cabin

Just in time for the end of the month, here is Raccoon Cabin, part 2 of our stitch-along of Country Cottage Needleworks’ Frosty Forest series. I must admit that all that snow slowed me down considerably (see previous post about the sudden desire to stitch something else): why is stitching lots of white so unappealing? But it was definitely worth pressing on after the break, because I really like these blocks. So, time for the next one!

Finalmente ho finito Raccoon Cabin, il secondo riquadro del nostro SAL di Frosty Forest (Country Cottage Needleworks). Devo ammettere che tutta quella neve mi ha rallentato parecchio stavolta (vedi post precedente sull’improvviso desiderio di fare qualcos’altro). Ma cosa sarà che rende il bianco così poco piacevole da usare? Ad ogni modo, almeno ne valeva la pena, perché questi riquadri mi piacciono proprio tanto. E ormai è quasi ora di cominciare il prossimo.

Love is…

Love is... (Summer House Stitche Workes)

Here’s a little project which I whipped up a couple of weeks ago, in a fit of wanting some quick gratification: a kit by Summer House Stitche Workes, called Love is…, which had been lurking in my stash for a couple of years. The adorable brass key was included. Part of the joy of stitching is diving in the stash when I get moods like this, and discovering little jewels which I’d almost forgotten about. Should do it more often.

Ecco un lavoretto che ho eseguito velocemente un paio di settimane fa, quando mi è venuto un’improvviso desiderio di immediata gratificazione. È un kit di Summer House Stitche Workes chiamato Love is…, che avevo in scorta da un paio di anni. La deliziosa chiave di ottone era inclusa nel kit. Ricorrere alle scorte e riscoprire piccoli gioielli quasi dimenticati è uno dei tanti aspetti piacevoli di questo hobby. Dovrei farlo più spesso.
